Opera: Burned fire blower to return home Thursday

CHICAGO (AP) ? A Chicago opera performer whose face was burned after he blew fire during a dress rehearsal is expected to return home from the hospital on Thursday.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago says Wesley Daniel's father updated its deputy general director, Drew Landmesser, on the performer's condition Tuesday morning.

Daniel plays a fire-blowing stilt walker in the opera's latest production. The 24-year-old performer was burned Monday after putting alcohol in his mouth and blowing fire during a dress rehearsal.

The opera says Daniel has second-degree burns around his mouth, but his throat and lungs are fine, and he should be discharged from Loyola University Medical Center on Thursday.

Lyric spokeswoman Magda Krance says Daniel was wearing a flameproof costume and mask during the dress rehearsal.
