On living with (mostly) mild disabilities

Look out?this one?s going to be especially rambly.

Back at this blog?s former home, I blogged more frequently about depression than I have lately?so much so that for a while, The Clutter Museum was ranked #1 in Google for the phrase ?depression in academia.?

Fortunately, I?m not dealing with those demons at the moment, but in the past couple of years, it?s become clear that another (usually very mild) disability is ascendant in me: asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

I?m one of those people who tends to ignore my disabilities until they become visible to others. ?Learning self-care (prevention and remediation) has been a long, hard road.

I began ignoring illness when I was young. I don?t think I?ve ever blogged about the thyroidy years, but when I was 11 years old and just starting horseback riding lessons, I began to feel really shaky and dizzy and just generally weak about midway through my lessons. ?One riding instructor thought it was low blood sugar. ?My pediatrician thought I might be allergic to horses (perish the thought!). Eventually, though, the pale, liver-spotted Dr. C turned his turkey-waddled head toward my father and noticed a pale scar extending across my dad?s throat. ?Is there,? he asked, ?a history of thyroid disease in your family??

Why, yes, it ends up there is.

Thus began a long,?long journey through several primary-care physicians and assorted specialists until I found a wild-haired little endocrinologist who wore a tweedy three-piece suit to his office in what was, to put it mildly, not the best part of Long Beach. Dr. B wrestled with my thyroid for years, trying everything?at one point having me take eight pills a day, spaced as evenly across the day as possible (a perfect prescription for a busy high school student, yes?)?before becoming exasperated by a series of inexplicable blood tests (?Were you hit by a truck??). ?He explained there were two doors ahead of me: Door number 1, he said, was surgery. ?Door number 2, radiation. ?He detailed the risks of each procedure.

I looked at the giant scar on my dad?s neck and opted for radiation. ?We had recently had the talk I imagine all parents eventually have with chronically ill teenagers who still believe in their own invincibility, symptoms be damned. ?Dad pointed out, rather bluntly, ?You could?die.?

Oh.

Furthermore, my parents made clear I couldn?t go to college until I was healthy. ?I was seventeen. ?Tick tock.

So soon I found myself greeted in a local hospital by a balding man in suspenders, bow tie, and lab coat, who announced, ?Hi! I?m Dr. M. ?I?ll be your nuclear radiologist for the day.? ?I sat in a chair; an intern shielded me with a lead apron and wheeled a tray before me. ?He picked up a lead vessel, unscrewed the lid, and placed a plastic bendy straw in it. ?Everyone retreated to the doorway. ??I?m told,? Dr. M said, ?it tastes like bad tap water.?

I drank. ?It did.

Dr. M told me not to ?sweat, spit, or pee on anyone for three days.? ?I was to use only plasticware at meals, stay 6 feet away from anyone under age 45 (3 feet from anyone over age 45), and flush twice.

Because the radioactive iodine I had just swallowed would, he explained, basically shoot all my thyroid hormones into my system at once, I could expect an elevated heart rate for a while. ?He prescribed Inderal in anticipation. ?Inderal gave me night terrors and hallucinations, neither of which I had experienced before. ?(The night terrors continue to this day.)

Shortly after I drank the radioactive cocktail, my hair started falling out. My vision was already crappy, but I didn?t think it was bad enough that I needed to wear glasses all the time, so my first indication of the hair loss was a change in the carpet color in front of the mirror where I brushed my hair. ?Fortunately, my I didn?t lose all my hair, though I could perform the fun parlor trick of grabbing a fingerful and yanking it out painlessly. ?(Surprise: I didn?t date in high school.)

After blood tests every week for a year, we found the correct dose of synthetic hormone, and now I test annually. ?Yes, my weight fluctuates?after all, I have no thyroid function to speak of?but eventually we found a maintenance dose that at least makes me feel human.

A hypothyroid, however, also can bring with it extra depression. ?Wheeee! ?Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I began to read about depression and realized, hey, maybe I should get that checked out, too. ?By that point (age 25) I was dating Fang, and he made sure I saw a therapist. ?She, in turn, made sure I saw a doctor who could prescribe some antidepressants.

Problem (sort of) solved. ?My depression waxes and wanes, as dysthymia is wont to do. ?I?m an exceptionally high-functioning depressive, and I?ve never missed a day of work because of it. Only once did I get so miserably behind on my responsibilities that I had to confess to a colleague I was struggling with depression. ?Fortunately, our work together addressed UC Davis?s accommodation of students, faculty, and staff with disabilities, and she both studied disability and lived with one; her level of understanding and compassion was high, for which I am grateful.

So, the tally:

  • Hyperthyroidism: eradicated.
  • Depression: manageable.

That leaves the lungs. ?Many of us who grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 1970s and 1980s breathed in a wretched stew of exhaust and other chemicals, and?who knew?!?it ends up there are long-lasting effects. ?I had chalked up my earlier failures to run ever faster (I topped out at a 6:58 mile in eighth grade) to my thryoid issues, but in eleventh grade, when I began playing French horn in three music ensembles at school, the chest pains began. ?At first, because I hadn?t yet solved the hyperthyroidism (that would come the following summer), I thought the pain was related to the general fatigue the thyroid curse engendered. ?The usual cardio tests ensued until during one exam, my physician lightly tapped my chest and I recoiled in pain. ??Ah,? he said, ?asthma!?

Going to college in Iowa didn?t help; forty percent of Iowans smoked, there weren?t a whole lot of smoke-free indoor spaces, and windows remained closed much of the year due to the cold or heat. ?My lungs were not pleased. ?That said, one summer there I took up running and regularly ran for 45 minutes to an hour, the longest I?d ever been able to run until that point. ?I went home to Long Beach and followed my sister on an eight-mile run, but lost interest in running when winter set in (cold air is another asthma trigger). ?Since leaving Iowa, there have been times I?ve tried to take up running, and I?ve followed many different plans along the lines of Couch to 5K, but I find I have to stop running just shy of one mile.

One mile!

I?ve talked to my physician about this, and her advice is to use the inhaler before I exercise. ?So I do. ?It makes very little difference.

Fortunately, I?m not looking to become a long-distance runner, but I admit I look at my friends? marathon and half-marathon and 5K and 10K photos on Facebook, as well as their Runkeeper updates there, and I get a bit wistful.

And it?s difficult to establish a regular exercise routine when every head cold inevitably goes to my lungs and becomes bronchitis or?in a disappointing turn since I moved to Boise?pneumonia. ?I can establish a good groove at the gym, and then bam! no workouts for months because: recuperation. ?(I very rarely miss work due to these illnesses because I have an overdeveloped sense of commitment to my students and colleagues, but working out is out of the question.)

Now I?m sick again, and it?s going into my chest. ?Today was a beautiful spring day, and I would have loved to spend it gardening, bicycling with Lucas, or hiking in the foothills before the rattlesnakes emerge.

Fang is, of course, frustrated beyond words. ?Dealing with a regularly ill spouse is no fun, and he does a great job of gracefully taking over my share of housework and childcare.

But I?m realizing I?m falling into an old pattern of living with something (thyroid, depression, asthma) without sufficiently addressing it until I?ve suffered quite a bit. ?I see reduced circumstances as normal, as inevitable. ?In this case, however, I?ve talked to my doctors, and all the tests say my immune system is fine. ?The doctors just say to rest. ?And so I sit still. ?And I get flabby. (Even lifting weights is tiring.) And it?s maddening.

In the past year, I?ve begun to really feel the effects of aging: the stiffness, the pull of gravity, the graying hair. ?(I?m 37.) ?I want to move, to get fit?I want to keep up with Lucas?but every effort meets with failure. ?I need to find a new way of thinking about my physical abilities going forward, one that encompasses a different kind of health and fitness than I see in my Facebook feed and in every damn mainstream media outlet.

Comment zen: I?m not looking for medical or fitness advice right now; please don?t give me any. ?If you know of resources that address how to deal psychologically with changing physical circumstances, however, I?m all ears.

(AP) ? Mike Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino are finally doing an encore.

For the first time since their teams played perhaps the greatest game in the history of the NCAA tournament, Krzyzewski and Pitino will meet in the NCAA tournament Sunday when top-seeded Louisville faces Duke. In the regional finals, no less.

Never mind that few of their current players were even born in 1992. Or that Pitino is no longer at Kentucky, having switched sides in the state's civil war after his brief trip to Boston and the NBA ended badly.

Krzyzewski and Pitino are forever linked by that one game in Philadelphia, immortalized by Christian Laettner's improbable shot.

"It's one of those moments in time that helped define our sport," Krzyzewski said Saturday. "When I've talked to Rick about it, we realize we were the lucky guys. We had different roles at that time, but we were both lucky to be there."

Said Pitino, "It was like being in Carnegie Hall and seeing the best musician or the best singer. Just sitting there in amazement of what they were doing out on the basketball court."

Krzyzewski and Pitino are two of the finest coaches of their generation, with five NCAA titles and 1,618 victories between them. Yet for all of their success, and for as good a friends as they are, Krzyzewski and Pitino rarely play each other.

When Louisville (32-5) and Duke (30-5) played in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in November ? Duke won ? it was the first time Krzyzewski and Pitino had played each other since '92. Sunday's game will be their third meeting ever.

"That's why we got them in the conference. Got to start doing this a little bit more," Krzyzewski joked, referring to Louisville's upcoming move to the ACC.

But almost nothing could top that first meeting between them.

The Blue Devils, led by Laettner and Grant Hill, were defending national champions in 1992. Kentucky was on the rise again after two years on probation. When they met in the old Spectrum for the East Region finals, it was a showdown of the 1 and 2 seeds, a game worthy of a national championship.

"It was such a high-scoring game with so much perfection in the way players passed and shot the ball. That's what made it stand the test of time," Pitino said. "It was a game where two coaches could sit back and watch great players perform at the highest level."

After coming from 10 down in regulation, Kentucky appeared to have the game won when Sean Woods made a running bank shot in the lane with 2.5 seconds left in overtime. Duke called a timeout, and gave the ball to Grant Hill to inbound.

The Wildcats knew the ball was going to Laettner, a 6-foot-11 center who'd made a buzzer-beater against Connecticut in the regional finals two years earlier. But without Jamal Mashburn ?he'd fouled out ? Pitino pulled John Pelphrey and Deron Feldhaus aside and warned them not to foul.

"I said, 'Whatever you do, don't foul him. He hasn't missed a shot,'" Pitino recalled. "I shouldn't have done that. That was the mistake I made. I should have said, 'Whatever you do, bat down the ball. I don't care what the contact is, go for the basketball.'

"You saw my guys freeze a little bit."

As anyone who's ever watched the NCAA tournament in the last 21 years knows, Hill threw a strike from the far baseline and found Laettner at the foul line with his back to the basket. Laettner faked right, spun to his left and his 15-footer hit nothing but net as the buzzer sounded.

"I don't think you can realize the significance at that time," Krzyzewski said. "I will always remember the stark difference in emotion. Because, right in front of me, Richie Farmer collapsed. I see our guys jump and I see him fall. And really, I was more taken by Richie. I understood by looking at him ... just how tough that was."

It was agonizing for the first 24 hours, Pitino said. But when he popped a tape of the game in the next day, he saw it in a different light.

"I just sat back and said, 'Darn, that was some hell of a basketball game,'" he said. "I got the guys together and I said, 'Man, that was a great game.' Really was a great game, especially playing without Mash."

Duke would go on to win its second straight title, beating Michigan in the final. Kentucky would complete its revival four years later when the Wildcats beat Syracuse for their sixth NCAA title and first since 1978.

But it is that game that everyone remembers, and the years have done nothing to diminish it.

Clips of the play are on repeat throughout the tournament each year. And as the NCAA celebrates 75 years of March Madness this year, the Laettner play has been among the highlights.

"I do think about it often," Pitino said. "Not from a revenge standpoint, but as a great game that I was happy to be part of.

"To me, it's one of the best losses I've ever had," he said. "A bad loss is where your guys play terrible, you don't play. It was a great loss because my guys played almost a perfect game and we just had the wrong ending for us. But it was one of the greatest basketball games ever played because it was so high-powered with great play. One great play after another. That was fun to be part of."

Self Help And Improvement Tips And Techniques | MySpareTime.net

Do you want to improve the quality of your life? The following are some suggestions for getting started with bettering yourself.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving personal development. Setting smaller, easily attainable goals prevents you from becoming discouraged. When you have specific goals set, you will find that you get results.

Becoming more healthy is an important part of developing personally. Having a healthy lifestyle is about watching your diet, working out and staying motivated to keep doing them both. If your health is important, you can feel better and have better impact in your life.

You can?t make everyone happy, but you can make yourself happy. This does not mean privileging your happiness to a fault, but it does mean that you must take responsibility for your own happiness. If what you?re doing is true to both your ethics and yourself, then you can be healthier with your path to personal development.

TIP! You may find it helpful to discuss your issues with a counselor or other trusted professional, such as your pastor. These professionals are equipped to discuss very deep, emotional issues and often have many years of experience.

Self-discipline is a key characteristic of any successful personal development plan. Learn to exercise self control over the desires of your body. You can conquer many desires such as lust, drunkenness, or greed. Using self-control and restraining from these horrid vices can protect you from the negative effects they may have on your body and mind.

Your personal development goals will often include improving and incorporating new healthy habits into your life. Feeling good is closely associated to good health. Your mind will be sharper, and you won?t have to pay for unneeded doctor visits or have to take the time off to be ill. Having a healthy life should be one of your main goals.

Follow your own principles as strictly as you can. Each person has a set of beliefs that determine who they are. When you consistently practice these, you will gain confidence and believe in yourself. This practice also promotes consistency, which is a great trait to have.

Every now and then, you may find yourself making a poor decision when it comes to food. Stress hurts your body as much as a large slice of high calorie pie, so take it all in stride.

TIP! Keep in mind the power of complimenting other people. Being nice to others will help you learn to be nicer to yourself.

Before you say anything you may regret, count to ten. Take a cleansing breath and focus on something positive. These tips will help you remain calm and keep from saying something you will regret later.

The goals that you have set in your self improvement plan should be clearly defined to show the steps toward achievement of success. By having specific goals in your mind, you?ll have a greater ability in breaking the path into doable pieces in order to accomplish the goal. Breaking it down allows you to meet your goals much easier, enjoying the satisfying feeling of success.

If you don?t take care of yourself, you won?t be able to take care of others. Whether you?re just starting your personal development plan or are well down the road and regardless of whether you?re succeeding or failing, you have to set aside time for yourself to rest, relax, and regroup.

Learn how not to worry. When you worry, you are imagining a horrible situation for yourself that has not yet come to pass, and probably never will. By preparing for a worst case scenario, you can focus your energies on more positive thoughts. By doing, this you will feel ready to deal with whatever the situation throws at you, so you will no longer have to worry.

TIP! Try to always make every day better than the one before. Push yourself to achieve growth that is constant and unwavering.

A useful self improvement tip is that you always cherish the things you believe are most valuable. Setting high standards for yourself can help you achieve self improvement you desire.

Don?t solely focus on your outside looks; have a look at the person you are within. It makes no difference if you have fancy clothing or resemble a movie star. Your personality is what will prevail in your life. You should work on becoming a better person on the inside rather than worrying about how to improve your outer appearance.

Humility is key. Remember that you are insignificantly small in this universe. Everyone has faults, and something to learn from everyone else. When you allow yourself to be aware of this, new vistas will open to you. You will be able to learn amazing things from each person you encounter if you encounter them in an open-minded fashion.

If you know what your beliefs are, you can help plan out what you will be working for in personal development. When you focus on things that don?t matter to you, your goals will never truly make sense. It is more important to develop the areas of your life that correspond with your values. This enables you to make lasting changes in your life, both in a personal and a professional capacity.

TIP! Do you frequently consume alcohol? Do you make a habit of smoking or engaging in other harmful vices? Our body is a temple, and therefore it should be treated like one. Sometimes, eliminating bad habits is what it takes to make your life better.

Personal development doesn?t have to be a struggle, as you can see from this article. The really important thing is to keep your mind focused on the great benefits to your well-being and satisfaction that a rigorous program of self-improvement will provide.

(AP) ? Tony Romo has a chance to start for the Dallas Cowboys longer than Roger Staubach or Troy Aikman. The question is whether he will ever match their Super Bowl pedigrees.

Romo signed a six-year contract extension worth $108 million Friday, with about half of that guaranteed to make him the highest-paid player in franchise history.

The agreement, reported on the team's website, will lower the quarterback's salary cap number for 2013 by about $5 million, giving the team more room to sign free agents and draft picks.

Romo, who turns 33 next month and was entering the final year of his contract, gets $55 million guaranteed.

Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco got $52 million guaranteed in the six-year, $120.6 million contract he signed with Baltimore earlier this month.

"I think it's just exciting more than anything that you know you're going to be here the rest of my career," Romo said in a video on the team's website that showed owner Jerry Jones exchanging high-fives with Romo's nearly 1-year-old son. "We're a team on the rise and I think it's going to show here going forward."

Romo could be with Dallas through 2019, giving him a chance to be the starter longer than the 11 seasons of Aikman and seven of Staubach, who was a part-time starter his first four years with the Cowboys.

Aikman and Staubach won five Super Bowls between them, while Romo has just one playoff win in six full seasons as the starter. He had a gut-wrenching playoff loss the year he took over midseason in 2006, flubbing the hold after driving the Cowboys into position for the go-ahead field goal in the final minutes.

Romo alluded to changes "behind the scenes" in the interview on the team's website, and Jones said in a statement that his quarterback will have "a significant level of input and contribution to the planning and implementing of our offensive approach ? both in the meeting room and on the field."

"Tony is uniquely qualified to lead this team at the quarterback position for the next several years," Jones said. "He knows how to run an offense and run a team."

Romo lost playoff-or-bust games in regular-season finales the past two years. That included a loss to Washington last season when Romo threw an interception with a chance to tie or win the game with a drive in the final 3 minutes.

A former Romo rival, Donovan McNabb, questioned the deal on Twitter.

"Wow really, with one playoff win," McNabb wrote. "You got to be kidding me."

Dez Bryant, who teamed with Romo for career highs of 1,382 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012, tweeted, "Congrats Big Tony on the contract extension."

Romo is the franchise leader in touchdown passes and the single-season leader in touchdowns, passing yards, completions and attempts. He had a career-high 4,903 passing yards in 2012 but matched his highest interception total at 19 and had his lowest quarterback rating at 90.5 rating.

His best rating of 102.5 came in 2011, when the Cowboys lost to the New York Giants with a playoff berth on the line in the finale. His other best season was 2009, which included his only playoff win against Philadelphia.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? A Confederate battle flag hung inside the old North Carolina State Capitol last week to mark the sesquicentennial of the Civil War is being taken down after civil rights leaders raised concerns.

The decision was announced Friday evening, hours after the Associated Press published a story about the flag, which officials said was part of an historical display intended to replicate how the antebellum building appeared in 1863. The flag had been planned to hang in the House chamber until April 2015, the 150th anniversary of the arrival of federal troops in Raleigh.

"This is a temporary exhibit in an historic site, but I've learned the governor's administration is going to use the old House chamber as working space," Cultural Resources Secretary Susan Kluttz said Friday night. "Given that information, this display will end this weekend rather than April of 2015."

Kim Genardo, the spokeswoman for Gov. Pat McCrory, said the exhibit that includes the Confederate battle flag will be relocated, possibly across the street to the N.C. Museum of History.

The decision was a quick about-face for the McCrory administration, which initially defended the display. Many people see the flag as a potent reminder of racial discrimination and bigotry.

State Historic Sites Director Keith Hardison had said Thursday the flag should be viewed in what he called the proper historical context.

"Our goal is not to create issues," said Hardison, a Civil War re-enactor and history buff. "Our goal is to help people understand issues of the past. ... If you refuse to put something that someone might object to or have a concern with in the exhibit, then you are basically censoring history."

North Carolina NAACP president Rev. William Barber was shocked Friday when he was shown a photo of the flag by the AP.

"He is right that it has a historical context," Barber said. "But what is that history? The history of racism. The history of lynchings. The history of death. The history of slavery. If you say that shouldn't be offensive, then either you don't know the history, or you are denying the history."

Barber couldn't immediately be reached Friday night, after the decision to take down the flag.

Sessions of the General Assembly moved to a newer building a half-century ago, but the old Capitol building is still routinely used as a venue for official state government events. McCrory's office is on the first floor, as are the offices of his chief of staff and communications staff.

The Republican governor was in the House chamber where the Confederate flag hangs as recently as Thursday, when he presided over the swearing-in ceremony of his new Highway Patrol commander.

The presentation of the Confederate battle flag at state government buildings has long been an issue of debate throughout the South. For more than a decade, the NAACP has urged its members to boycott South Carolina because of that state's display of the flag on the State House grounds.

Prior to taking his current job in North Carolina in 2006, Hardison worked as director at the Mississippi home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, which is operated as a museum and library owned by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The group has led the fight in the South for the proud display of the Confederate flag, which it contends is a symbol of heritage, not hate.

Hardison said the battle flag was displayed with other flags described in the diary of a North Carolina woman who visited the Capitol in 1863. A large U.S. flag displayed in the Senate chamber is reminiscent of a trophy of war captured from Union troops at the Battle of Plymouth.

"I thought, wouldn't it be wonderful to recreate this?" Hardison said. "I think we were all thinking along the same vein. ... The Capitol is both a working seat of government, in that the governor and his staff has his office there. But it is also a museum."

Hardison pointed out that the national flag used by the Confederate government, with its circle of white stars and red and white stripes, is still flown over the State Capitol dome each year on Confederate Memorial Day. The more familiar blood-red battle flag, featuring a blue "X'' studded with white stars, was used by the rebel military.

David Goldfield, a history professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and author of the book "Still Fighting the Civil War," said the battle flag can hold starkly different meanings depending on a person's social perspective.

"The history of the Confederate battle flag, how it was designed and formulated, how it has been used through the years, clearly states that it is a flag of white supremacy," Goldfield said. "I know current Sons of Confederate Veterans would dispute that, saying 'Hey, I'm not a racist.' But the fact remains that the battle flag was used by a country that had as its foundation the protection and extension of human bondage."

Brazilian doctor charged with 7 murders, may have killed 300: investigator

By Anthony Boadle

BRASILIA (Reuters) - A Brazilian doctor who was charged with killing seven patients to free up beds at a hospital intensive care unit may have been responsible for as many as 300 deaths, according to a Health Ministry investigator.

Prosecutors said Dr. Virginia Soares de Souza and her medical team administered muscle relaxing drugs to patients, then reduced their oxygen supply, causing them to die of asphyxia at the Evangelical Hospital in the southern city of Curitiba.

De Souza, a 56-year-old widow, was arrested last month and charged with seven counts of aggravated first degree murder. Three other doctors, three nurses and a physiotherapist who worked under De Souza have also been charged with murder.

Prosecutors for the state of Parana said wiretaps of De Souza's phone conversations revealed that her motive was to free up hospital beds for other patients.

"I want to clear the intensive care unit. It's making me itch," she said in one recording released to Brazilian media. "Unfortunately, our mission is to be go-betweens on the springboard to the next life," she added in the same phone call.

De Souza's lawyer, Elias Mattar Assad, said investigators had misunderstood how an intensive care unit works and she would prove her innocence.

More cases are expected to emerge as investigators comb through 1,700 medical records of patients who died in the last seven years at the hospital, where De Souza headed the intensive care unit.

"We already have more than 20 cases established, and there are nearly 300 more that we are looking into," the chief investigator assigned by Brazil's Health Ministry, Dr. Mario Lobato, said on Globo TV's Fantastico program on Sunday.

If prosecutors prove that De Souza killed 300 patients, this could be one of the world's worst serial killings, rivaling the notorious case of Harold Shipman, the English doctor who was found to have killed at least 215 patients.

Lobato said the deaths he reviewed occurred under similar circumstances: a muscle relaxant such as Pancuronium (trademark Pavulon) was administered, increasing the patients' dependence on artificial respiration; then the oxygen supply was reduced, causing death by asphyxia.

Some of the patients were conscious moments before they died, he said.

Prosecutors said De Souza felt "all powerful" running the intensive care unit homicide, to the point where she "had the power to decree the moment when a victim would die."

In some cases, De Souza was absent from the hospital and gave instructions to end the life of a patient by telephone to members of her medical team, according to documents detailing the charges.

Last week, a Curitiba judge ordered the release of De Souza and her medical team. Prosecutors sought on Monday to have her returned to custody because she was the leader of the team and witnesses had reported being intimidated.

Parana state prosecutors asked police on Wednesday to investigate whether more hospital employees, including former managers, were involved in the case.

President Dilma Rousseff's government will announce steps on Thursday to reorganize the hospital, a spokesman for the Health Ministry said.

Autism risk not increased by early vaccines: study

NEW YORK (Reuters) - There is no link between receiving a number of vaccines early in life and autism, researchers said on Friday.

In a study slated to appear in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers said there is no association between receiving "too many vaccines too soon" and autism, despite some fears among parents around the number of vaccines given both on a single day and over the first 2 years of life.

As many as one in 50 U.S. school-age children have been diagnosed with autism, up 72 percent since 2007.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Abt Associates analyzed data from children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to a statement from the journal.

Researchers examined each child's cumulative exposure to antigens, the substances in vaccines that cause the body's immune system to produce antibodies to fight disease, and the maximum number of antigens each child received in a single day of vaccination, the journal's statement said.

The antigen totals were the same for children with and without ASD, researchers found.

Autism runs a spectrum from a profound inability to communicate and mental retardation to milder symptoms seen in Asperger's Syndrome.

While scientists believe genetics account for 80 to 90 percent of the risk for developing autism, a growing number of studies are beginning to suggest that a father's age at the time of conception may play a role by increasing risks for genetic mistakes in the sperm that could be passed along to offspring.

Worries about a link between vaccines and autism have persisted for years, despite a growing body of scientific evidence disproving such an association.

Test Drive A Renault, Get A Private Show From ... - Business Insider

Experiential ads are taking over.

Renault UK allowed two unsuspecting people to test drive its new Clio model with a fake car sales person.

When the drivers stopped at an intersection, they were asked to they try the "va va voom" button on the car's dash.

Upon doing so, they were immediately transported to Paris in the form of an impromptu piece of street theater ? via a kissing couple, an Eiffel Tower backdrop, baguette and rose vendors, and then dancing girls and guys.

The two ads ? one featuring dancing women in lingerie, the other topless men ??embraces the trend of immersive "experiential" ads that plunge everyday consumers into strange situations, which are filmed for YouTube. Belgian agency Duval Guillaume popularized the trend when it released a video last year for TNT, in which people in a random European square were bombarded by biker gangs, gun fights, and other dramatic scenarios after pushing a red button. The TNT spot now has more than 44 million views.

The Renault ad incorporates not only the button pushing, but another ingredient of a recently successful experiential ad: a test drive gone wrong.

Pepsi's most successful social video ever, released earlier this month, had race car driver Jeff Gordon dress up and take a used car salesman on a high octane, terrifying test drive. (It also turned out to be completely fake, but that didn't stop it from becoming a viral success.)

Renault's carefully planned ad was created by Manning Gottlieb OMB and Unruly's Social Video Lab. Unruly is a social company that tracks online videos that go viral and breaks down the causes of its success.

This is Unruly's first time working with a company on making an ad that it thinks will go viral.

One significant difference between Renault's campaign is that both TNT and Pepsi only had one video meant to appeal to both sexes. Renault broke its campaign into two videos: one aimed at mainly at guys (featuring women in lingerie) and the other mostly at women (starring a batch of shirtless dudes). Will this decrease or increase the overall sharing?

Here's the other ad:

Trees used to create recyclable, efficient solar cell

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Solar cells are just like leaves, capturing the sunlight and turning it into energy. It's fitting that they can now be made partially from trees.

Georgia Institute of Technology and Purdue University researchers have developed efficient solar cells using natural substrates derived from plants such as trees. Just as importantly, by fabricating them on cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) substrates, the solar cells can be quickly recycled in water at the end of their lifecycle.

The technology is published in the journal Scientific Reports, the latest open-access journal from the Nature Publishing Group.

The researchers report that the organic solar cells reach a power conversion efficiency of 2.7 percent, an unprecedented figure for cells on substrates derived from renewable raw materials. The CNC substrates on which the solar cells are fabricated are optically transparent, enabling light to pass through them before being absorbed by a very thin layer of an organic semiconductor. During the recycling process, the solar cells are simply immersed in water at room temperature. Within only minutes, the CNC substrate dissolves and the solar cell can be separated easily into its major components.

Georgia Tech College of Engineering Professor Bernard Kippelen led the study and says his team's project opens the door for a truly recyclable, sustainable and renewable solar cell technology.

"The development and performance of organic substrates in solar technology continues to improve, providing engineers with a good indication of future applications," said Kippelen, who is also the director of Georgia Tech's Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics (COPE). "But organic solar cells must be recyclable. Otherwise we are simply solving one problem, less dependence on fossil fuels, while creating another, a technology that produces energy from renewable sources but is not disposable at the end of its lifecycle."

To date, organic solar cells have been typically fabricated on glass or plastic. Neither is easily recyclable, and petroleum-based substrates are not very eco-friendly. For instance, if cells fabricated on glass were to break during manufacturing or installation, the useless materials would be difficult to dispose of. Paper substrates are better for the environment, but have shown limited performance because of high surface roughness or porosity. However, cellulose nanomaterials made from wood are green, renewable and sustainable. The substrates have a low surface roughness of only about two nanometers.

"Our next steps will be to work toward improving the power conversion efficiency over 10 percent, levels similar to solar cells fabricated on glass or petroleum-based substrates," said Kippelen. The group plans to achieve this by optimizing the optical properties of the solar cell's electrode.

Purdue School of Materials Engineering associate professor Jeffrey Youngblood collaborated with Kippelen on the research.

A provisional patent on the technology has been filed with the U.S. Patent Office.

There's also another positive impact of using natural products to create cellulose nanomaterials. The nation's forest product industry projects that tens of millions of tons of them could be produced once large-scale production begins, potentially in the next five years.

The research is the latest project by COPE, which studies the use and development of printed electronics. Last year the center created the first-ever completely plastic solar cell.

Potential Chagas vaccine candidate shows unprecedented efficacy

Mar. 26, 2013 ? Scientists are getting closer to a Chagas disease vaccine, something many believed impossible only 10 years ago. Research from the Sealy Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has resulted in a safe vaccine candidate that is simple to produce and shows a greater than 90 percent protection rate against chronic infection in mice.

In a paper published online in PLOS ONE, the researchers describe how they identified and tested potential Trypanosoma cruzi (also known as T. cruzi or Chagas disease) antigen candidates and delivery models to establish the safety and efficacy of a vaccine formulation known asTcVac3. This potential vaccine could halt the irreversible heart and organ damage that afflicts approximately 30 percent of those infected with Chagas.

"This signals a scientific breakthrough -- unprecedented vaccine efficacy for a common parasitic disease with no cure for chronic sufferers," said lead author Nisha Garg, PhD, professor of microbiology, immunology and pathology at UTMB. "If this vaccine proves practical, it could be approved in as few as five years for use in canines, which are reservoir hosts of the disease. As many as 20 percent of dogs may be infected in Texas alone, developing the same heart conditions as humans but mistaken by vets for heartworm."

The study also provides further evidence that a human Chagas vaccine is possible, a topic of debate among some who still believe that Chagas heart disease is the result of an autoimmune disorder, she added.

T. cruzi, transmitted by the triatomine insect, or "kissing bug," is prevalent in almost all Latin American countries and is becoming more common in the U.S. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 10 million people -- mostly children -- are infected worldwide. Approximately 13,000 die each year from the complications of Chagas-induced heart disease -- a result of the chronic infection Garg and her team aim to vaccinate against. It is estimated that the global economic burden of Chagas is about $7 billion a year.

TcVac3: The Path of Discovery

TcVac3 is the result of rigorous computational/bioinformatics analysis and screening of the T. cruzi genome for potential candidate antigens over several years by Garg and her team. These analyses led the researchers to three potential antigens (TcG1, TcG2 and TcG4) for further investigation.

Next, they began testing these antigens and potential vaccine delivery models -- how the components are arranged in the actual vaccine -- to determine the best approaches.

Early experiments proved that delivery of the candidate antigens by a DNA-prime/protein boost approach, along with co-delivery of IL-12 and GM-CSF cytokine adjuvants meant to enhance the immune response, was effective in generating antibody and T cell responses capable of providing more than 90 percent control of acute infection and parasite burden in infected mice.

Recognizing, however, that this vaccine delivery model was quite complex, the scientists sought to simplify the vaccine using a DNA-prime/Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-boost approach -- a delivery model that offers many advantages: it can accommodate multiple foreign genes in its genome; may be administered by a variety of routes; has an excellent safety record; and has been shown to generate immune responses to a variety of foreign antigens. MVA itself can act as an adjuvant since it provides a signal to the innate immune system and can boost T cells.

Based on preliminarystudies by the researchers that showed this delivery model to be potent, the scientists next tested the protective efficacy of TcVac3, constituted of just the TcG2 and TcG4 candidates and lacking the adjuvants, delivered by the DNA/MVA approach.

With two doses of the vaccine, the mice with TcVac3-induced antibodies exhibited 92 to 96 percent protection against chronic infection. They found that the DNA/MVA approach increased the vaccine efficacy enough to omit one of the antigens and the adjuvants, making it a much simpler but still highly effective vaccine.

"Because Chagas is most prevalent in developing countries, it is essential that a potential vaccine be inexpensive to develop and easy to deliver," said Garg. "TcVac3 accomplishes this goal, making it not just an effective candidate, but an ideal one."

Future research will determine if the vaccine composition can be simplified even further. In addition, the scientists are already conducting related trials in canines. Garg and her team are also working on pre-clinical trials of human patient samples, testing for immune response in patients that are already infected but not showing signs of chronic disease. Results of both studies are anticipated later this year.

You don't 'own' your own genes: Researchers raise alarm about loss of individual 'genomic liberty' due to gene patents

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Humans don't "own" their own genes, the cellular chemicals that define who they are and what diseases they might be at risk for. Through more than 40,000 patents on DNA molecules, companies have essentially claimed the entire human genome for profit, report two researchers who analyzed the patents on human DNA.

Their study, published March 25 in the journal Genome Medicine, raises an alarm about the loss of individual "genomic liberty."

In their new analysis, the research team examined two types of patented DNA sequences: long and short fragments. They discovered that 41 percent of the human genome is covered by longer DNA patents that often cover whole genes. They also found that, because many genes share similar sequences within their genetic structure, if all of the "short sequence" patents were allowed in aggregate, they could account for 100 percent of the genome.

Furthermore, the study's lead author, Dr. Christopher E. Mason of Weill Cornell Medical College, and the study's co-author, Dr. Jeffrey Rosenfeld, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey and a member of the High Performance and Research Computing Group, found that short sequences from patents also cover virtually the entire genome -- even outside of genes.

"If these patents are enforced, our genomic liberty is lost," says Dr. Mason, an assistant professor of physiology and biophysics and computational genomics in computational biomedicine at the Institute for Computational Biomedicine at Weill Cornell. "Just as we enter the era of personalized medicine, we are ironically living in the most restrictive age of genomics. You have to ask, how is it possible that my doctor cannot look at my DNA without being concerned about patent infringement?"

The U.S. Supreme Court will review genomic patent rights in an upcoming hearing on April 15. At issue is the right of a molecular diagnostic company to claim patents not only on two key breast and ovarian cancer genes -- BRCA1 and BRCA2 -- but also on any small sequence of code within BRCA1, including a striking patent for only 15 nucleotides.

In its study, the research team matched small sequences within BRCA1 to other genes and found that just this one molecular diagnostic company's patents also covered at least 689 other human genes -- most of which have nothing to do with breast or ovarian cancer; rather, its patents cover 19 other cancers as well as genes involved in brain development and heart functioning.

"This means if the Supreme Court upholds the current scope of the patents, no physician or researcher can study the DNA of these genes from their patients, and no diagnostic test or drug can be developed based on any of these genes without infringing a patent," says Dr. Mason.

One Patented Sequence Matched More Than 91 Percent of Human Genes

Dr. Mason undertook the study because he realized that his research into brain and cancer disorders inevitably involved studying genes that were protected by patents.

Under U.S. patent law, genes can be patented by those researchers, either at companies or institutions, who are first to find a gene that promises a useful application, such as for a diagnostic test. For example, the patents received by a company in the 1990s on BRCA1 and BRCA2 enables it to offer a diagnostic test to women who may have, or may be at risk for, breast or ovarian cancer due to mutations in one or both of these genes. Women and their doctors have no choice but to use the services of the patents' owner, which costs $3,000 per test, "whereas any of the hundreds of clinical laboratories around the country could perform such a test for possibly much less," says Dr. Mason.

The impact on these patents is equally onerous on research, Dr. Mason adds.

"Almost every day, I come across a gene that is patented -- a situation that is common for every geneticist in every lab," says Dr. Mason.

Dr. Mason and his research partner sought to determine how many other genes may be impacted by gene patents, as well as the overall landscape of intellectual property on the human genome.

To conduct the study, Dr. Mason and Dr. Rosenfeld examined the structure of the human genome in the context of two types of patented sequences: short and long fragments of DNA. They used matches to known genes that were confirmed to be present in patent claims, ranging from as few as 15 nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA) to the full length of all patented DNA fragments.

Before examining the patented sequences, the researchers first calculated how many genes had common segments of 15 nucleotide (15mer), and found that every gene in the human genome matched at least one other gene in this respect, ranging from as few as five matches 15mer to as many as 7,688 gene matches. They also discovered that 99.999 percent of 15mers in the human genome are repeated at least twice.

"This demonstrates that short patent sequences are extremely non-specific and that a 15mer claim from one gene will always cross-match and patent a portion of another gene as well," says Dr. Mason. "This means it is actually impossible to have a 15mer patent for just one gene."

Next, researchers examined the total sequence space in human genes covered by 15mers in current patent claims. They found 58 patents whose claims covered at least 10 percent of all bases of all human genes. The broadest patent claimed sequences that matched 91.5 percent of human genes. Then, when they took existing gene patents and matched patented 15mers to known genes, they discovered that 100 percent of known genes are patented.

"There is a real controversy regarding gene ownership due to the overlap of many competing patent claims. It is unclear who really owns the rights to any gene," says Dr. Rosenfeld. "While the Supreme Court is hearing one case concerning just the BRCA1 patent, there are also many other patents whose claims would cover those same genes. Do we need to go through every gene to look at who made the first claim to that gene, even if only one small part? If we resort to this rule, then the first patents to be granted for any DNA will have a vast claim over portions of the human genome."

A further issue of concern is that patents on DNA can readily cross species boundaries. A company can have a patent that they received for cow breeding and have that patent cover a large percentage of human genes. Indeed, the researchers found that one company owns the rights to 84 percent of all human genes for a patent they received for cow breeding. "It seems silly that a patent designed to study cow genetics also claims the majority of human genes," says Dr. Rosenfeld.

Finally, they also examined the impact of longer claimed DNA sequences from existing gene patents, which ranged from a few dozen bases up to thousands of bases of DNA, and found that these long, claimed sequences matched 41 percent (9,361) of human genes. Their analysis concluded that almost all clinically relevant genes have already been patented, especially for short sequence patents, showing all human genes are patented many times over.

"This is, so to speak, patently ridiculous," adds Dr. Mason. "If patent claims that use these small DNA sequences are upheld, it could potentially create a situation where a piece of every gene in the human genome is patented by a phalanx of competing patents."

In their discussion, the researchers argue that the U.S. Supreme Court now has a chance to shape the balance between the medical good versus inventor protection, adding that, in their opinion, the court should limit the patenting of existing nucleotide sequences, due to their broad scope and non-specificity in the human genome.

"I am extremely pro-patent, but I simply believe that people should not be able to patent a product of nature," Dr. Mason says. "Moreover, I believe that individuals have an innate right to their own genome, or to allow their doctor to look at that genome, just like the lungs or kidneys. Failure to resolve these ambiguities perpetuates a direct threat to genomic liberty, or the right to one's own DNA."

PFT: Dolphins to repay public fiunds ... in 2043

lincoln-stove-pipe-hat-2811

Free agency opened 15 days ago.? This year, the initial surge of cash was more limited than ever, more than a few guys settled for one-year deals, and plenty of other players are still waiting to get paid.

For some, the issue is cap space.? For many, it can?t be.? As of Tuesday, March 26, 13 teams still had more than $10 million in spending room for 2013, and five still had more than $20 million, per a source with knowledge of the NFLPA?s calculation of remaining cap room.

Leading the way are the Bengals, who despite numerous re-signings still have $28.9 million to spend.? The Browns come in a close second, with $28.7 million.

The Bucs get the bronze for saving their gold, with $26.8 million.? Also, the Jaguars have $26.6 million, and the Eagles have $26.3 million.

Others with eight figures include the Packers with $18.3 million, the Bills with $16.8 million, the Dolphins with $15.7 million, the Cardinals with $14.0 million, the supposedly spending-to-the-cap Patriots with $13.4 million, the supposedly cap-strapped Jets with $13.0 million, the Colts with $11.7 million, and the Titans with $10.7 million.

This year, teams are required to spend 89 percent of the unadjusted cap.? But that number is determined at least for now on a four-year rolling average, which essentially allows teams to pocket 44 percent of a single year?s spending limit from 2013 through 2016.? Based on the current cap numbers, some teams are well on their way to that number.

An Unsentimental Look at Joy, Meaning, and Safer Health Care ...

Boston, MA, March 26, 2013--Health care workers are experiencing an epidemic of demoralization, fatigue, and risk of injury that threatens not only their safety, but the safety of the patients under their care. That?s the central premise of Through the Eyes of the Workforce: Creating Joy, Meaning, and Safer Health Care, the latest white paper from the Lucian Leape Institute at NPSF. During a well-attended webcast on March 19, members of the Leape Institute Roundtable that produced the paper discussed the issue and proposed pathways to improvement.

Julianne Morath, RN, MS, an internationally recognized authority on patient safety and a founding member of the Leape Institute, began the program with evidence suggesting widespread dissatisfaction with health care as a workplace. For example, 60% of those responding to a survey of physicians said they are considering leaving practice, while 37% of newly licensed nurses are thinking of leaving their jobs.

Ms. Morath noted the dual problems of physical and psychological harm. In the former category, needlestick injuries, back injuries from lifting patients, and the exposure to chemicals all place health care workers at greater risk of injury. Psychological harm is rampant, with lack of respect, lack of support, and production pressures all adding to an environment short on joy and meaning.

?People working under stress, and in the absence of psychological safety, are found to be less vigilant with regard to safety practices, both for patients and for themselves,? she said.

Workplace safety, Ms. Morath said, is a precondition for joy and meaning in work. ?These are not sentimental notions,? she added. ?The costs of inaction are significant.?

David Michaels, PhD, MPH, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health, US Department of Labor, was among the presenters. He pointed out that many people are surprised to learn that health care workers experience the highest rates of injury and illness in the country. ?The same lessons that we know from manufacturing, from construction, to reduce injury and illness are the ones that can be applied to health care,? he said.

Improving the situation will require leadership commitment, robust systems of reporting and evaluating risk, and the evolution of the health care culture from one of disrespect to one of healthy teamwork.

Also speaking during yesterday?s program were Paul O?Neill, former chairman and CEO of Alcoa and the 72nd Secretary of the US Treasury, who has been involved in health and safety issues for much of his professional life, and Sandy Shea, policy director, Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU Healthcare.

Questions posed to the panel covered a range of concerns, one being that health care organizations? primary focus is ?generating revenue.? How, then, to get leadership to understand the importance of this issue?

?It doesn?t cost more money to be respectful,? said Mr. O?Neill. ?It doesn?t cost more money to investigate things gone wrong in real time.?

In response to a concern about employees? fears of reporting, Ms. Shea suggested that managers and supervisors, ?need to model good, responsible, conscientious behavior. You have to communicate that it?s a safe environment for reporting.?

Through the Eyes of the Workforce recommends seven broad actions that organizations should pursue if they are serious about improvements in this area.

This topic is one of five transforming concepts identified by the Leape Institute as areas requiring system-level attention and action to improve patient safety. The white paper is the result of two interdisciplinary roundtables and focus groups held on the topic.

At $15 per year, Password Genie barely costs more than LastPass 2.0 Premium (which runs $12 per year). You can install the product on up to five PCs or Macs and sync your stored data between those. The free Android edition will also sync with your PC-based accounts, as will an iOS edition that's in the works now.

Getting Started
As with LastPass 2.0, Dashlane 1.1, and almost all other password managers, you define a strong master password during the installation process. This password protects all of your other passwords, so it really needs to be something that you can remember but that nobody else would guess.

The master password field turns green when you've achieved a minimal strength level. That's decent, but others offer more help. Dashlane's master password wizard leads you through the process of creating a password that's both strong and memorable, a process similar to PCMag's own recommended technique. Norton Identity Safe displays a sliding scale of password strength, with specific advice on how to reach a higher level.

During installation you can choose to import any passwords you've saved in Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari. (The fact that Password Genie can import these may clue you in to the fact that browser-stored passwords aren't all that secure.) New in this version, you can choose to import those passwords even after the initial installation.

Password Capture
Like LastPass, Password Genie integrates with the browser by installing a single, simple button. The button clearly visible in Firefox; in some versions of Internet Explorer, you may find it pushed out of view until you click the >> button at the far end of the browser toolbar.

When you log in to a secure site, Password Genie offers to save your credentials. Like LastPass, it lets you identify a new or existing folder to categorize the site you're saving. By default, it names the saved site using the URL, but you can change that name to whatever will be most memorable. Password Genie uses a popup dialog box to gather this information; LastPass and Identity Safe have switched to a less obtrusive infobar that slides in from the top of the browser window.

In testing, Password Genie correctly captured almost all of the sites I tried. One oddball site uses two password fields; I couldn't get that one into Password Genie even by editing with the Advanced Form. With its "Save All Entered Data" feature, LastPass is among the few that handle this particular page.

If you log in to a known site using different credentials, Password Genie offers two choices: save a new login or replace the existing one. It detects password change events very nicely, and also detects when you're creating a new account. By default it will pop up with a suggested strong password for that new account. You can also launch its password generator manually.

Do high natural gas prices mean the shale boom is ending?

High natural gas prices?seriously undermine the official story that the US has a century of cheap natural gas waiting for the drillbit, Cobb writes.

By Kurt Cobb,?Guest blogger / March 26, 2013

A crew works on a gas drilling rig at a well site for shale based natural gas in Zelienople, Pa. The present and the past suggest that the so-called shale gas revolution is about to end, Cobb writes.

As U.S. natural gas prices flirt with the $4 mark, some skeptics of the so-called shale gas revolution think prices are headed much higher. Such a move would, not surprisingly, seriously undermine the official story that the United States has a century of cheap natural gas waiting for the drillbit.

Several years ago when natural gas began flowing in great quantities from deep shale deposits beneath American soil, it seemed to be the beginning of the end of America?s troubled journey into dependence on energy imports?a journey marked by frequent worry, occasional war and enormous expense.

But, to some people this supposed solution to America?s energy needs has begun to seem as costly to the environment and human health as the country?s dependence on imported energy has been in terms of mental distress, money and blood. It turns out that this new kind of natural gas requires the industrialization of the countryside in order to extract it. And that, say those closest to the action, risks tainting air, land, and drinking water and compromising the health of humans and animals alike.

Well, at least we can say that shale gas is plentiful, cheap, American, and much easier on the climate than coal or oil. It didn?t take too long before people started looking into whether shale gas really was that much easier on the climate.?A Cornell University researcher came to the conclusion that shale gas was probably worse for climate change than coal. His conclusion hinged in part on what are called ?fugitive emissions??unintentional, but unavoidable releases of unburned methane into the atmosphere during the?hydraulic fracturingoperations performed to extract the gas. Methane is?some 20 times more potent?than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.?

How To Find Safe Online Business Opportunities | Content for Reprint

Author: Vladimir Mesic | Total views: 106 Comments: 0
Word Count: 989 Date:

There are so many scams on the internet so I understand if you are looking for safe online business opportunities which you can be sure are leading you in the right direction and at least to some sort of success without the lies, fake promises and unrealistic expectations.

Chances are, you have already spent money on some of the make money online products and courses or got involved with one of the thousands of online business opportunities promoted online. The hype sales pages promise you instant money from commissions coming into your bank account while you spend the time doing things you like, lying on the beach drinking a cocktail of your choice, an internet business in a box, push button, just copy and paste, type way to make money with hardly any work involved.

Unfortunately it's getting worse and the number of these types of products is growing daily. There are millions of people who are trying to make extra money online and are falling for these scams. Some will argue that these programs and products are not scams but if you use the criteria of what value is offered to the buyer and what is actually promised in the sales letter or sales video, then most of these online business opportunities are scams.

So what can you do to avoid paying or joining an online business opportunity that will just cost you money or more importantly your time and the risk that you will invest your resources, using outdated techniques and practices which could actually be harmful to your credibility or your success? Here are some important things to consider when searching for safe online business opportunities.

Only consider spending your money with someone who stands openly in front of the offer with their name, real proof of why you should trust him or her. Make sure that when you find out their name to search them in Google and at least look up if they are actually a real person. They should have their personal website, be on places like Linkedin, published something of value and have a positive footprint.

If there is a gorgeous young woman, a hired actress pitching an easy way to riches with a one shoe fits all approach that anyone can do with no experience or website needed, no technical skills needed, no writing needed, then just walk away and don't even bother to look into it. Just remember or write down the website address so you can avoid it in the future but best is to ignore it.

If there are amazing promises of unbelievable earnings and screenshots of those earnings of a zillion dollars and x amount of cents with a lot of mansions, million dollar yachts and offcourse the absolute must of all scam sales pages, a latest model red Ferrari, to mention a few, then just use your mouse productively and get out. This brings me to the next point.

If you've started watching the sales video or sales page and you are not sure about whether to trust this guy, if you click to close the page and get another page asking you to stay on the page for a Special Offer with a discount offered, you try to close it again and there is another discount and another, that is a sure sign that the value of that product is just as low as the discounts on offer. Again not worth wasting your time with that either.

I would recommend that you work on getting real skills and proficiencies first. It is important to first gain the basic knowledge of how things work on the internet. The subject is huge to talk about in this article but understanding the process of owning and hosting your website, content creation, search engine optimization, writing sales copy, traffic generation and many other links in the chain is a start.

However, this general knowledge is just the beginning. You must acquire skills which will enable you to do research and choose your field, register your domain, host your site, know how to optimize your site, add content to it, learn how to drive free and paid traffic , how to monetize your content and so on.

You need to be good at basics before you can go on and achieve great success and. Learn to walk before you can start thinking of participating in the World Athletics Championship.

The problem is people don't want to put in the hard work and gain the necessary skills which are a must to succeed at anything, rather they keep searching for an easy push button solutions and go from one opportunity to another.

The real diamond of information you can take with you from my article here, in my opinion, is that you need to concentrate on getting real online skills. You need to be able to do things like log into your website, change anything you want to it, add more content or change your links and banner ads for example without relying on someone to do that for you. You need to know the technical part of building a list and writing copy.

Believe me, all that requires a lot of work, meaning time which we all in this age have in limited quantities. Here is a thought I'll leave you with regarding safe online business opportunities. There is no such thing as, completely "safe", which is especially true when talking about business in general.

After saying all that, if you have at least some of the skills mentioned here, it will be easy for you to choose safe online business opportunities and work on building a business and not waste your precious time chasing one business opportunity after another.
