The Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences is continuing to help address the needs of health services by adapting its training for Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSPs).
LJMU?s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme in Bowel Cancer Screening was developed in partnership with the Mersey School of Endoscopy at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen NHS Trust in response to the national Bowel Cancer Screening initiative announced in 2005.
This initiative targets people at risk from developing bowel cancer, the 3rd highest cause of death by cancer in the UK each year. All SSPs tasked with delivering the initiative must undertake a Bowel Cancer Screening Programme within 6 months of taking up the role.? Since the LJMU/Royal jointly designed and delivered CPD was launched in 2007, SSPs from across England have successfully worked through the 10 month programme.
To ensure that the Programme continues to meet the needs of SSPs, this year saw a major revision of the programme lead by LJMU?s Sue Baker, Senior Lecturer in the Advanced Practice Team and the Royal?s Dr Paul O'Toole, Consultant Gastroenterologist and North West Regional Quality Assurance Lead for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, in collaboration with Lynn Colman, Assistant Director of the Department of Health National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
Changes to the SSP role and developments within the national screening programme were addressed and an extensive evaluation was undertaken with all stakeholders to ensure that their input was incorporated into the revisions. The new course includes advanced communication skills, management of complex co-morbidities, risk management and colonoscopy as well as human factor training to minimise patient risk.
The first delivery of the new programme started in September 2012 with over 20 students and a further cohort will begin in March 2013.
Sue Baker said:
"This programme is a good example of LJMU working with national experts to respond to the needs of industry. LJMU is the only provider of this programme in England and through it, all qualified SSPs meet the standards on the national Bowel Screening Programme, thus improving patient safety."?
